Dr. Omane Boamah Laid to Rest: Final Funeral Rites Begin in Koforidua

Koforidua will today become the focal point of national reflection as the final funeral rites of former Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, are held at Jackson’s Park in the Eastern Regional capital.

The ceremony, scheduled for 12:00 noon in the New Juaben South Municipality, is expected to bring together a broad cross-section of the nation. Senior government officials, executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), traditional authorities, party faithful, and members of the public are all anticipated to attend, united in honouring the life and service of the late statesman.

Dr. Omane Boamah, who previously served as Director of Elections and Information Technology of the NDC, passed away on August 6, 2025, following a tragic military helicopter crash during an official mission. The Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH helicopter, bearing tail number GHF 631, went down while on duty, resulting in the loss of all eight occupants on board.

Among those who lost their lives in the incident were Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice-Chair; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. The tragedy sent shockwaves across the country, cutting short the lives of individuals deeply involved in public service and national security.

In the weeks since the incident, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, reflecting the wide respect Dr. Omane Boamah commanded. Many have spoken of his unwavering commitment to democratic governance, national defence, and party organization. A senior NDC official described him as “a dedicated servant of the state whose contributions reinforced both our democratic institutions and the strength of the party.”

Today’s funeral ceremony at Jackson’s Park is expected to be both solemn and symbolic, serving not only as a farewell to Dr. Omane Boamah but also as a collective tribute to all those who perished in the crash. The event underscores the national importance of their service and sacrifice.

The tragedy has also reignited public discourse on aviation safety, particularly concerning official state operations. Many have called for strengthened institutional safeguards and improved operational standards to help prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring the safety of those entrusted with national duties.

As Koforidua hosts this moment of remembrance, the nation pauses to honour lives dedicated to service, duty, and the advancement of Ghana’s democratic and security institutions.
